WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL OIL ?
They have been called the Life Force and the Hormones of the plant. Usually secreted from Special glands/ducts or cells in one of several parts of aromatic plants, from sap and tissues of certain trees. They are present in flowers, roots, stems, bark & leaves.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:-
Essential oils need to be stored correctly as they are volatile, flammable, sensitive to light and evaporate quickly. Airtight dark glass bottles are used for maximum shelf life.
They are to be used externally; internal use of pure essential oils is not recommended but Medical Herbalism can be of help.
- Aromatherapy Oils to avoid during the first Five months of pregnancy are:
- Angelica, Clary sage, Cedar wood, Juniper, Lovage, Peppermint,
Rose, Rosemary, Spanish Marjoram, Sweet Marjoram, Sweet Fennel, True
Melissa essential oils. - If you have a history of Miscarriage then Lavender and Roman
Chamomile are best avoided. - During pregnancy use all other essential oils in Half the usual stated
amount. - For whole pregnancy avoid:
- Basil, Celery seed, Cinnamon, Citronella, Sage all types,
Clove, Hyssop, Juniper, Marjoram, Myrrh, Nutmeg, and Thyme essential oils.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
for Aromatherapy oils are:
- Fennel, Hyssop, Rosemary, Sage (all types) are best avoided
- Clary Sage are best avoided while drinking alcohol.
- Hyssop, Rosemary, Sage (all types), and Thyme essential oils are best avoided if you have High Blood pressure.
BABIES AND CHILDREN:
Use with care in accordance with age.
Babies (0 - 12 months) - use 1 drop of Lavender, Rose, Chamomile, or Mandarin aromatherapy oils in 1 teaspoon of base oil for Aromatherapy Massage or bathing.
Children (1 - 5 years) - use 2 - 3 drops of Essential oils [non-toxic and non-irritant to the skin] diluted in a teaspoon of base oil for Aromatherapy massage and bathing.
Children (6 - 12 years) - use as for adults but in half the stated amount.
Teenagers (over 12 years) use as for adults.
METHODS OF USE
- Bath: 6 - 8 drops essential oil
- Compress: 2 - 8 drops essential oil per Hot or Cold compress
- Inhalant to breathe in: 6 - 10 drops on paper tissue, 3 - 5drops in a basin of Hot water.
- Vaporiser: 6 - 8 drops aromatherapy oils
- Massage: 15 - 30 drops of essential oil in 50 mls of oil. Add 5% Vitamin E Oil to the Grape seed oil & use within 1 - 2 months.
All Base Oils, Base creams, Base Butters are diluted with essential oils at the same strength as guidelines above.
These include Cocoa Butter, Avocado Butter, Shea Butter, Hemp Butter, Hemp Oil, Rosehip oil which are also used in back care products by Clinical Aromatherapists & Reflexologists.
Body care products with Cocoa Butter & Shea butter are popular; they have a long shelf life compared to Base oils.
Body care products with aromatherapy oils are more recently made into fun craft gift aromatherapy products themed & expertly handcrafted with simple & safe ingredients.
