The History of Reflexology Massage
Reflexology can be used to achieve harmony in the body
Reflexology is a science which is practical, simple & safe.
The History of Zone Therapy forms the basis for modern day foot reflexology.
Dr William Fitzgerald (1872- 1942), the founder of Zone Therapy went to Vienna in the early part of the nineteenth century to consider treating organs by using pressure points.
In his book Zone Therapy he notes that it`s use was known some 5,000 years ago in India & China. However, this knowledge appeared to have been lost or set aside in favour of Acupuncture.
Similar methods were described by Physicians Adamus & A`Tatis in 1582.
The Florentine Sculptor Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) used strong pressure to relieve pain anywhere in his body with remarkable success.
President of America James A Garfield (1831-1881) was able to relieve pain following an assassination attempt. No other pain killing medication worked for him.
North American tribes knew of the relationship between parts of the body and reflex points and they used this to treat disease.
Dr Edwin Bowers in 1916 first made public the treatment nurtured by Dr Fitzgerald and called it `Zone Therapy. Their combined work a year later appeared in the book `Zone Therapy` with recommendations for Doctors, Dentists, Gynaecologists, ENT Specialists and Chiropractors.
In India Zone therapy is still used for pain relief.
In early 1930 Zone Therapy became further refined into Foot Reflexology by Eunice Ingham, a Physical Therapist. - She charted the feet in relation to the zones & the effects on the rest of the body and this was the step to making Reflexology more available to the general public. Eunice Ingham used alternating pressure and discovered remarkable effects beyond pain reduction.
She wrote her first book in 1938 `Stories feet can Tell` and is now recognised as the founder of Foot Reflexology.
